Blog - Important: New ID Verification Requirements from 1 July 2026

- Diane Tipping
From 1 July 2026, all accounting practices in Australia are required to carry out identity verification (ID checks) for clients. These new rules are designed to strengthen security, prevent fraud, and ensure compliance with government regulations.
What this means for you
- New Quest clients – we will need to verify identification before any work can begin.
- Existing Quest clients – you may be asked to verify your ID in certain situations, including (but not limited to):
- Setting up a new business entity or structure (e.g. company, trust, SMSF).
- Updating contact (email, address, phone numbers) or banking details.
- A change in relationship status, such as a split between directors, business partners, or spouses.
- When there are large or unusual refund claims.
- Any situation where there are concerns about impersonation or the accuracy of information provided.
How the process works
The ID verification process is straightforward. It usually involves providing a government-issued form of identification (such as a driver’s licence or passport), through a secure online verification system.
We use software called Content Snare to securely collect this information. It will let you know what documents are needed and guide you through each step.
Why this matters
While these requirements are new, they are in place to protect you and your business. By confirming identities when key changes occur, we can help prevent fraud, identity theft, and errors in your financial records.
We will only request ID verification when required and will always handle your information securely and confidentially.
If you have any questions about the new requirements or how they may apply to you, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you for your cooperation as we implement these changes.
